The Definitive Wing-T by Larry Dillon Wing-T Philosophy * The Wing-T offense is designed to score points while at the same time controlling the ball, field position, and wearing down, both physically and mentally, the opponent's defense * It is important that we obtain a balance between the run and the pass to aviod becoming too predictable. THerefore, we will employ a play-action passing attack which complements our run game. * For our offense to be successful our lineman must get off the ball and sustain their blocks for at least ten steps. Our backs must carry out their fakes for at least 20 yards down field. Therefore, considerable amount of time will be spent in practice on fundamentals of this offense. by Larry Dillon Offensive Goals Our offense has five main goals that must be achieved each game to ensure success. * SCORE - We want to score every time we have the ball * CONTROL THE FOOTBALL - Play posession football and control the field position and the clock. * PRESSURE THE DEFENSE - with two basic threats, the run and the pass * ATTACK THE ENTIRE FIELD - both horizontally and vertically, thus spreading the opponent's defense * AVOID MISTAKES - aviod mental mistakes, missed assignments, penalties, and turnovers by Larry Dillon The Huddle Center calls the huddle 7 yards from the ball yelling "HUDDLE HUDDLE" QB stays out till play comes in. QB gives the play and says "READY" and everyone else says "BREAK" and claps. Everyone holds hands in the back. When the QB comes into the huddle everyone is silent. WB 12 15 yds if in spread. 2 4 8 6 3' 4 2' 2 2' 3 3 2' 5 2' 7 9 10 or 12 yds 1 5 1' by 1' by Larry Dillon Play Calling When a play is called in the huddle it is called the following way Formation, motion, series, back, hole, blocking, pass routes Run Play example: Right, Zac, 223 trap Pass Play Example:Pro Right 923 whip, flag out (pass routes are always right to left) Cadence: QB walks to the line checking defense. He has a rhythmic cadence that uses numbers. Example "2-19 2-19 Set Hut" First sound is on "Hut" On 2 is the second "Hut" QB can audible by using the first number as the snap count as hot number. Example: QB has play 222 on "1". He comes to the line and sees a stunt hole. He'll change the play at the line "1-923 1-923 Set Hut." Base Block - a block used to block a man on you. Step with play side foot, deliver blow with away side shoulder and forearm. Aim for outside hip of defender drive through man rotate hips to playside. 2. Down Block Used to block first man down on the line, inside on an adjacent offensive lineman. Step flat down to inside with inside foot, rip backside arm through, deliver blow with near shoulder and forearm drive the man down the line. Head should be on the back hip of defensive lineman note: if defensive man is penetrating, use Gap block technique. 3. Fire Block - Used to agressively block man on play side. Step with play side foot, laterally and slightly up field, deliver blow inside shoulder and forearm. Head should be outside of defender. Once you have position on him rotate hips into hole and block turns into base block. 4. Gap Block - Used to block man in inside gap. Step down inside with foot, rip backside arm and leg through. Deliver blow with far side shoulder and forearm, getting head across the D lineman's belt. This is a reverse shoulder block used to stop penetration. 5. Log Block - Block used to hook the end man on the line of scrimmage. Take pull step to the play side, get depth, attempt to head outside and hook defensive man. If he opens up kick him out. 6. Pull - Used to get to the point of attack and carry out assignment. Take short open step with play side foot, rip play side elbow back then rip backside arm and leg through. Continue behind line execute blocking assignment, kick out or wall off. 7. Trap Block - Used to block inside out on a defensive lineman. Take short step with play side foot, rip backside arm and leg through, replace adjacent lineman gaining ground. Deliver blow with playside shoulder and forearm with head upfield. The Definitive Wing-T by Larry Dillon Wing-T Philosophy * The Wing-T offense is designed to score points while at the same time controlling the ball, field position, and wearing down, both physically and mentally, the opponent's defense * It is important that we obtain a balance between the run and the pass to aviod becoming too predictable. THerefore, we will employ a play-action passing attack which complements our run game. * For our offense to be successful our lineman must get off the ball and sustain their blocks for at least ten steps. Our backs must carry out their fakes for at least 20 yards down field. Therefore, considerable amount of time will be spent in practice on fundamentals of this offense. by Larry Dillon Offensive Goals Our offense has five main goals that must be achieved each game to ensure success. * SCORE - We want to score every time we have the ball * CONTROL THE FOOTBALL - Play posession football and control the field position and the clock. * PRESSURE THE DEFENSE - with two basic threats, the run and the pass * ATTACK THE ENTIRE FIELD - both horizontally and vertically, thus spreading the opponent's defense * AVOID MISTAKES - aviod mental mistakes, missed assignments, penalties, and turnovers by Larry Dillon The Huddle Center calls the huddle 7 yards from the ball yelling "HUDDLE HUDDLE" QB stays out till play comes in. Base Block - a block used to block a man on you. Step with play side foot, deliver blow with away side shoulder and forearm. Aim for outside hip of defender drive through man rotate hips to playside. 2. Down Block Used to block first man down on the line, inside on an adjacent offensive lineman. Step flat down to inside with inside foot, rip backside arm through, deliver blow with near shoulder and forearm drive the man down the line. Head should be on the back hip of defensive lineman note: if defensive man is penetrating, use Gap block technique. 3. Fire Block - Used to agressively block man on play side. Step with play side foot, laterally and slightly up field, deliver blow inside shoulder and forearm. Head should be outside of defender. Once you have position on him rotate hips into hole and block turns into base block. 4. Gap Block - Used to block man in inside gap. Step down inside with foot, rip backside arm and leg through. Deliver blow with far side shoulder and forearm, getting head across the D lineman's belt. This is a reverse shoulder block used to stop penetration. 5. Log Block - Block used to hook the end man on the line of scrimmage. Take pull step to the play side, get depth, attempt to head outside and hook defensive man. If he opens up kick him out. 6. Pull - Used to get to the point of attack and carry out assignment. Take short open step with play side foot, rip play side elbow back then rip backside arm and leg through. Continue behind line execute blocking assignment, kick out or wall off. 7. Trap Block - Used to block inside out on a defensive lineman. Take short step with play side foot, rip backside arm and leg through, replace adjacent lineman gaining ground. Deliver blow with playside shoulder and forearm with head upfield. My efforts have resulted in this book. I do not claim to be the inventor of these drills. I have gotten them from many different people and clinics that I have attended over the years. Some of these drills I learned as a player in high school and college and I have been using them ever since. Many of these drills can even be found on the internet. Through out my career as a football player and now as a coach I have learned that the best way that you can learn something is by committing it to muscle memory. I have found that the best way that you can do this is by doing something over and over again until you have it perfect. The drills that I have collected in this book are to be used to help improve that muscle memory. Football coaches at all levels, especially in community and youth leagues, are constantly searching for drills that promote this muscle memory in their athletes. They also want to develop these skills so that they can be used in game situations. I have seen many books in my career that have shown a few drills that can be used for a few positions. What I have done is create a book that can be handed over to a position coach, studied, and used in the planning of practice plans for a given position. To win consistently, you must win in the trenches and that means playing on your opponent’s side of the line of scrimmage not yours. Information contained in this section is my personal believes and the basic mechanics I use when talking technique and developing the terminology I will use with my drill work. The information contained in this section will be the fundamental wording when teaching your technique and developing your drills. It is my approach, like many other line coaches that we out – execute our opponents. This is a lot easier said than done! To take this approach and to believe in this philosophy means a great deal of time must be spent on fundamentals and blocking technique. My primary goal as I prepare our blocking schemes is that they be simple and that they have a basic rule that can tie them all into one another. Thus, I try to keep the rules and line calls simple, it will give your offensive line the chance to perfect there techniques and perform them in an aggressive manner. To be a good offensive line requires more than just discipline or good blocking technique. It requires “PRIDE” – pride in yourself; your group; and your team. A team with “PRIDE” is a hard team to beat. It’s my belief, the faster your offensive line understands that working for common goals as a group, not as individuals, builds your foundation for UNITY and PRIDE. A group that’s unified is more apt to do the “LITTLE THINGS” that most teams are not willing to do. No detail should ever be overlooked, regardless of how non-important it may look on the surface. The difference between WINNING and LOSING often lies in the failure to do the little things! Not every offensive lineman that plays for you will make it to the NFL or COLLEGE or be an ALL-AMERICAN or even a STARTER, but every offensive lineman that decides to play for you can hustle and hit and be a good TEAM PLAYER. V PROPER STANCE - GUARDS / TACKLES a good stance no matter what level of football you are coaching is basic to sound execution. The stance you are teaching must directly relate to the plays you are running. Without a good stance, your offensive line will be unable to execute their assignments and techniques properly. The stance I teach is a three point stance with the weight basically distributed over the inside of the feet with as little weight on the down hand as possible. It is extremely important that you be consistent with your stance - be able to make all necessary movements from the same stance. Your run stance must look like your passing stance. Defensive players are always "alert" for anyone "tipping" their intentions by changing their stance. 1. BASE: - Shoulder width but never wider. (If the base is too wide, it tends to cause you to false step or to over extend the base on the snap of the ball). 2. FEET: - "Toes" pointing slightly in - to get to this position you need to emphasis "heels" slightly out. This position will force your power through the inside of the knee to the "balls" of your feet. NEVER allow the back heel on the staggered foot to come of the ground more than 1/2 inch. This is important for maximum traction on get-off. 3. STAGGER: - Stagger the feet so that there is a 2 to 3 inch relationship between the up foot and the back foot. Never more than a heel to toe relationship, The stagger relationship is geared to a balanced stance. 4. ELBOWS AND HANDS: The down hand should be position off the near ear, with the down hand resting off the finger tips. The opposite forearm resting slightly above the knee or off to the side. The hands should be relaxed and not forming a fist. 5. SHOULDERS - BACK - BACKSIDE: You want your shoulders square to the L.O.S. with the back flat or parallel to the ground. The backside should be an extension of the back and NOT in a squatted or drooping position. Picture the back being a table and you can set dinner plates without sliding off. 6. HEAD AND NECK: You want the head and neck to be an extension to shoulders, back, and backside. You want the neck to be in a semi-bowed position but not in a "bulled - neck" position that forces the backside to drop. 7. POWER ANGLE OVER FOOT: The stagger of the feet places the up foot in a position to create power producing angles in the ankles and knees. This is called a "Z" in the knee. To get this position, slightly roll the knees forward on the up foot so that it is over the toe. This will place the weight on the balls of the feet - outside heel may come slightly off the ground. 8. INITIAL MOVEMENT: As an offensive lineman you must be able to explode out of your stance; your back parallel to the ground, make sure your going FORWARD NOT UPWARD. We want our offensive linemen always stepping with their near foot when exploding off the L.O.S. as it applies to scheme and play called. It will be necessary at times to shift your weight from one foot to the other - this can be a mental shift rather than a physical one. 1 Start Drill/With Ankle Hold Purpose: To teach proper stance and start technique for offensive lineman. This drill helps emphasize the importance of the second step. Execution: Align offensive lineman on a selected line of scrimmage. The coach designates block and cadence. The coach or player will hold the back foot of the lineman causing him to rip it free on the second step after the snap count. Coaching Points: 1. The player should mentally shift his weight to the first foot after the quick 6 to 8 inch power step. 2. The toes of the first step should replace the down hand to help maintain a good base and not to be over or under stride. 3. The player knees should be a roll over his toes. We want numbers over knees, and knees over toes. 4. The player should keep a flat back and head up. 5. the first step should be followed quickly by the second and third steps 6. emphasize 7. Action - For this offensive line drill, position your linemen along the line of scrimmage. At the coach's signal, have the offensive linemen "fire out" of their stances. Coaching Details - In their stance, linemen's feet should be shoulder-width apart and pointed straight ahead. Teach offensive line players to step out with the back foot to maintain their base as the first step out replaces their down hand. The head should remain up, the back flat as they take quick steps out. Be sure your players stay low as they roll over the up foot with the knee pointing to the ground. 2) Fit Drill Objective - To teach the straight ahead base block. Action - Align three or four defenders in the standing "fit" position with three or four offensive linemen in front of them. The linemen should be set in their stances. At the snap, have the linemen explode either right or left into the defenders as they perform a basic drive block. Coaching Details - Watch for good stances and leg follow-through during this offensive line drill. Make sure players' backs are arched, butts are down and their heads are up "seeing" the defender's jersey number. On contact, the elbows should be in with palms near the bottom of the defender's shoulder pad 3) Fit Follow-Through Drill Objective - To teach proper follow-through when blocking. Action - Instead of lining your linemen up in their stances, have the offensive line drill start with them already in the "fit" position against the defender. At the coach's signal, the offensive line players will roll their hips and accelerate forward. The idea is to teach the players to drive the defenders back until the coach blows the whistle. Coaching Details - Watch for proper hip roll and foot acceleration. Don't allow your blockers to overextend and lose proper leverage during this offensive line drill. 25 Sled Offensive Line Drills Line Drill #1 One-Man Drive Objective - Improve leg drive. Action - Get your linemen into a single file in front of a one-man sled, with the first player about 1 yard away from the sled. On the coach's signal, the first lineman performs a base block (with explosive power) into the sled. On the next signal, the player then does a seat roll and sprints ahead five yards before going to the end of the line. Repeat offensive line drill with next player in line. Coaching Details - Be sure each lineman is in a good stance and takes a correct first step out with an explosive motion. Make sure they're moving the sled ahead in a straight line with power-based, short steps. Offensive Line Drill #2 Hip Roll (2-Man Sled) Objective - Develop the hip roll. Action - Divide linemen up into two lines in front of a 2-man sled, with the first player in each line about 1 yard from the sled. On the coach's signal, each player, without moving the feet, moves the sled ahead with the forward thrust of the hips. On the next signal, the players then do a seat roll and sprint ahead five yards before going to the end of the line. Repeat offensive line drill with next players in line. Coaching Details - Be sure each lineman is in a good stance and takes a correct first step out with an explosive motion without the feet coming together. Offensive Line Drill #3 Drive and Roll (2-Man Sled) Objective - Improve leg drive. Action - Line up blockers like in Drill #2. Also, position a player on either side and about 5 yards beyond the sled, each holding a blocking dummy. At the coach's signal, the first player in each line explodes their inside shoulder into the sled and drives it straight ahead. At the next signal, each player performs a seat roll and explodes forward to block the lineman holding the dummy on their side of the sled. The two players who just performed the offensive line drill, now become the dummy holders while the original dummy holders now go to the end of the lines. Repeat offensive line drill with the next players in line. Coaching Details - Be sure each lineman is in a good stance. Make sure they're moving the sled ahead in a straight line with power-based, short steps. Emphasize "explosion" out of the stance. 26 Offensive Line Drill #4 5-Man Drive Objective - Improve start and drive block with the 5-man sled. Action - Have the first unit line up in front of the 5-man sled. On the coach's signal, have all five blocker's hit the sled with the same shoulder and move the sled forward. On the next signal, have all players sprint out laterally to the side. If they hit the sled with the right shoulder, they should move out to the left and vice versa. The next unit repeats the offensive line drill as soon as the group in front of them has moved out of the way. Coaching Details - Be sure each unit has a chance to block with each shoulder. Be sure each lineman starts out of a good stance, then uses proper blocking technique. Offensive Line Drill #5 5-Man Reach Drill Objective - Improve proper reach block. Action - Start everything like Offensive Line Drill #4 except that now each blocker is lined up to the right or left of each sled pad, depending on the direction of the reach block you want to work on. On the coach's signal, all five players execute a reach block, drive the sled, then move out laterally on the next signal. The next unit moves in and repeats the offensive line drill. Coaching Details - Be sure each unit has a chance to reach block from both sides. Be sure each lineman starts out of a good stance, then uses proper blocking technique. Emphasize driving the sled in a straight line. Offensive Line Drill #6 5-Man Seat Roll Objective - Improve agility and explosion. Action - Align the lineman in a single file just to one side and parallel with the 5-man sled. The first player in line gets into a 3-point stance in front of the first pad. On the coach's signal, he fires out into the pad with the inside shoulder, then performs a seat roll and ends up in front of the next pad. The next player in line, meanwhile, gets into a 3-point stance in front of the first pad. On the coach's signal, these two players repeat the same drill as the next player in line gets into position in front of the first pad. Repeat this offensive line drill until the last blocker in line has reached the far end of the sled. Coaching Details - Emphasize the need to explode into the sled each time, then get a quick recovery in order to seat roll to the next pad. Run this drill from both sides. 27 Reach Block Purpose: To emphasize the fundamentals of the reach block Coaching Pointers: When the defender is shading in the direction of the play take a paralele step toward him, drive hard off the step, and execute a good base block. This is not a chip block, a seal block or a chop block. We want a solid base block When taking your jab step, make it parallel to the line, and watch the defender closely for any quick inside penetration. If he is coming hard make the block quicker Such a defensive move will make your easier. If he slants away from you just push him down the line of scrimmage or chip him and go to second level. Set-up and Instruction: Position all of the lineman in two parallel lines facing each other as illustrated. Instruct one line to be defenders; the other blockers. Alternate these assignments so that everyone gets atleast for or five repitions on offense. Tell the defenders to shade the blockers slightly, to line up on an inside or outside shoulder. Vary the cadence. On the snap count, have the blockers execute a reach block. Check for an appropriate first step, followed by good blocking fundamentals. Make a lot of corrections during this drill and have each lineman execute the block as deliberately as possible. Commit everything to muscle memory. 28 Seal Block Purpose: to emphasize the fundamentals of the seal block Coaching Pointers: This is not a devastating block! All we want to do is eliminate penetration or prevent pursuit. Most of the time, you’ll be blocking a defender who is head up on the blocker next to you. The blocker next to you may be pulling, so you’ll have to seal the man who is head up on him. Remember, eliminate his pursuit or penetration! The eastiest way to do it is to cut him, chop him, get your body into his legs and feet! On the snap, extend your head and arms into his feet and legs – and keep driving your legs! Drive right through him, if possible. If you can stay on all fours and crab him, that’s even better, just be sure to get into his legs! Set-up and Instruction: Position all the linemen in two parallel lines facing each other as illustrated. Instruct one line to be defenders and the other, blockers. Instruct the blockers to position themselves in the normal splits. Alternate the two lines so that everyone gets at least four or five reps on offense. Tell the defenders to line up one man to their left or right. Have all the lineman execute the seal block in both directions, be sure each gets at least three or four reps in each direction. Make corrections as needed. 29 Cross-Block Purpose: to emphasize the fundamentals of the cross block Coaching Pointers: This blocking scheme may be called in the huddle when expecting a certain defensive front. If you can call it on the line, call it when the player next to you may have trouble making his block because of the alignment or shading. Remember the player on the outside normally blocks first; the player on the inside normally blocks second The first player should slant down hard, putting his head in front of the defender to prevent penetration. The second player should jab step in the direction of his block, look at the defender, and drive hard off his teammate’s backside. Don’t hesitate. Wait just long enough for your teammate to clear in front of you. Set-up and Instruction: Align the guards and tackles in lines as illustrated. Position defenders in front of them, varying their alignment. Sometimes have the man on the guard’s head shade his inside shoulder. At other times, put a linebacker in his normal alignment, then move into the B gap to blitz. Explain ehy each situation requires a cross block, then have the linemen execute the blocks. Once a tandem completes their block have them swith to defense. Check for good lead steps in the direction of the blocks, quickness of execution, and blocking fundamentals, make lots of corrections. 30 Double Teaming Purpose: to emphasize the fundamentals of a double team block. Coaching Pointers: The blocker furthest from the defender executes a DRIVE block: the blocker closest to the defender executes a Post Block A DRIVE block is a good base block. Lower the boom on the inside man and drive him out of the hole. A POST block simply prevents penetration and sets up the defender to be driven out of the hole. When you POST block, don’t put your head to either side of the defender. Keep your head in front of him and prevent penetration. Try to hit the defender at the same time. That means the drive blocker is going to have to really move. Set-up and Instructions: Align all the offensive linemen in two lines, one player with a stand up dummy in front of the inside line as illustrated. Use the above coaching pointers and some of your own to explain the responsibilities of the blockers. Alternate the dummy holder with the blockers so that all lineman get for or five repetitions at each position. This is not a rapid fire drill. Be sure to take enough time to explain, teach, and make corrections. 31 Broom Stick Battle Purpose: To simulate hand fighting of lineman Coaching Points: Each pair of lineman will need a broom handle The offensive lineman will take an inside grip using both hands. The defensive player will grip the broom handle of the outside. Defensive player will try to push, pull, twist, and unbalance the offensive lineman. For the offensive lineman to control the broom stick they will have to be in a good position to control their balance. This will be the same position when they pass block Set-up and Instructions: Pair up the lineman, one will take the offensive role while the other will be the defensive player. Offensive lineman will place both hands on the inside of the handle, while the defensive player will grasp toward the outside of the handle. On the count of the coach the defensive player wil try to push, pull, twist, raise and lower the broom stick. The offensive lineman will resist the movements and will try to control the movement of the broom handle. 32 Grading Lineman WHY GRADE LINEMAN: Makes the lineman accountable, It gives the lineman something to take pride in. HOW: Each player has two areas that are graded. Technique and Execution. Technique is whether they are doing the fundamentals right (staying low, proper steps, head on the proper side, Etc.) Execution is whether they made the block or not. They will receive a (+) or a (-) for each one. Their grade is figured out by counting up all the pluses the lineman receive and dividing it by the total number of chances (total plays they were in times two.) For Example: if a lineman was in for 20 plays and received 24 pluses, their grade would be 24/40 = 60% WHAT IS A GOOD GRADE: A winning grade is 70% or better. If the linemen grade out as a team at 70% we have a good chance that we will control the line of scrimmage and the game. OTHER STATS: We also recors other stats for the lineman: knockdowns (K), Loafs (L), Missed assignments (MA), Sacks given up (S), and Penalties (P) POSTING THE GRADES: We put up the tally sheets every Monday after school. Game totals and season totals HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE: 2-21/2 hours to grade. I will watch every play 5 to 7 times. It takes about 15 minutes to type the ino into the computer. (If the base is too wide, it tends to cause you to false step or to over extend the base on the snap of the ball). 2. FEET: - "Toes" pointing slightly in - to get to this position you need to emphasis "heels" slightly out. This position will force your power through the inside of the knee to the "balls" of your feet. NEVER allow the back heel on the staggered foot to come of the ground more than 1/2 inch. This is important for maximum traction on get-off. 3. STAGGER: - Stagger the feet so that there is a 2 to 3 inch relationship between the up foot and the back foot. Never more than a heel to toe relationship, The stagger relationship is geared to a balanced stance. 4. ELBOWS AND HANDS: The down hand should be position off the near ear, with the down hand resting off the finger tips. The opposite forearm resting slightly above the knee or off to the side. The hands should be relaxed and not forming a fist. 5. SHOULDERS - BACK - BACKSIDE: You want your shoulders square to the L.O.S. with the back flat or parallel to the ground. The backside should be an extension of the back and NOT in a squatted or drooping position. Picture the back being a table and you can set dinner plates without sliding off. 6. HEAD AND NECK: You want the head and neck to be an extension to shoulders, back, and backside. You want the neck to be in a semi-bowed position but not in a "bulled - neck" position that forces the backside to drop. 7. POWER ANGLE OVER FOOT: The stagger of the feet places the up foot in a position to create power producing angles in the ankles and knees. This is called a "Z" in the knee. To get this position, slightly roll the knees forward on the up foot so that it is over the toe. This will place the weight on the balls of the feet - outside heel may come slightly off the ground. 8. INITIAL MOVEMENT: As an offensive lineman you must be able to explode out of your stance; your back parallel to the ground, make sure your going FORWARD NOT UPWARD. We want our offensive linemen always stepping with their near foot when exploding off the L.O.S. as it applies to scheme and play called. It will be necessary at times to shift your weight from one foot to the other - this can be a mental shift rather than a physical one. 1 Start Drill/With Ankle Hold Purpose: To teach proper stance and start technique for offensive lineman. This drill helps emphasize the importance of the second step. Execution: Align offensive lineman on a selected line of scrimmage. The coach designates block and cadence. The coach or player will hold the back foot of the lineman causing him to rip it free on the second step after the snap count. Coaching Points: 1. The player should mentally shift his weight to the first foot after the quick 6 to 8 inch power step. 2. The toes of the first step should replace the down hand to help maintain a good base and not to be over or under stride. 3. The player knees should be a roll over his toes. We want numbers over knees, and knees over toes. 4. The player should keep a flat back and head up. 5. the first step should be followed quickly by the second and third steps 6. emphasize 7. Action - For this offensive line drill, position your linemen along the line of scrimmage. At the coach's signal, have the offensive linemen "fire out" of their stances. Coaching Details - In their stance, linemen's feet should be shoulder-width apart and pointed straight ahead. Teach offensive line players to step out with the back foot to maintain their base as the first step out replaces their down hand. The head should remain up, the back flat as they take quick steps out. Be sure your players stay low as they roll over the up foot with the knee pointing to the ground. 2) Fit Drill Objective - To teach the straight ahead base block. Action - Align three or four defenders in the standing "fit" position with three or four offensive linemen in front of them. The linemen should be set in their stances. At the snap, have the linemen explode either right or left into the defenders as they perform a basic drive block. Coaching Details - Watch for good stances and leg follow-through during this offensive line drill. Make sure players' backs are arched, butts are down and their heads are up "seeing" the defender's jersey number. On contact, the elbows should be in with palms near the bottom of the defender's shoulder pad 3) Fit Follow-Through Drill Objective - To teach proper follow-through when blocking. Action - Instead of lining your linemen up in their stances, have the offensive line drill start with them already in the "fit" position against the defender. At the coach's signal, the offensive line players will roll their hips and accelerate forward. The idea is to teach the players to drive the defenders back until the coach blows the whistle. Coaching Details - Watch for proper hip roll and foot acceleration. Don't allow your blockers to overextend and lose proper leverage during this offensive line drill. 25 Sled Offensive Line Drills Line Drill #1 One-Man Drive Objective - Improve leg drive. Action - Get your linemen into a single file in front of a one-man sled, with the first player about 1 yard away from the sled. On the coach's signal, the first lineman performs a base block (with explosive power) into the sled. On the next signal, the player then does a seat roll and sprints ahead five yards before going to the end of the line. Repeat offensive line drill with next player in line. Coaching Details - Be sure each lineman is in a good stance and takes a correct first step out with an explosive motion. Make sure they're moving the sled ahead in a straight line with power-based, short steps. Offensive Line Drill #2 Hip Roll (2-Man Sled) Objective - Develop the hip roll. Action - Divide linemen up into two lines in front of a 2-man sled, with the first player in each line about 1 yard from the sled. On the coach's signal, each player, without moving the feet, moves the sled ahead with the forward thrust of the hips. On the next signal, the players then do a seat roll and sprint ahead five yards before going to the end of the line. Repeat offensive line drill with next players in line. Coaching Details - Be sure each lineman is in a good stance and takes a correct first step out with an explosive motion without the feet coming together. Offensive Line Drill #3 Drive and Roll (2-Man Sled) Objective - Improve leg drive. Action - Line up blockers like in Drill #2. Also, position a player on either side and about 5 yards beyond the sled, each holding a blocking dummy. At the coach's signal, the first player in each line explodes their inside shoulder into the sled and drives it straight ahead. At the next signal, each player performs a seat roll and explodes forward to block the lineman holding the dummy on their side of the sled. The two players who just performed the offensive line drill, now become the dummy holders while the original dummy holders now go to the end of the lines. Repeat offensive line drill with the next players in line. Coaching Details - Be sure each lineman is in a good stance. Make sure they're moving the sled ahead in a straight line with power-based, short steps. Emphasize "explosion" out of the stance. 26 Offensive Line Drill #4 5-Man Drive Objective - Improve start and drive block with the 5-man sled. Action - Have the first unit line up in front of the 5-man sled. On the coach's signal, have all five blocker's hit the sled with the same shoulder and move the sled forward. On the next signal, have all players sprint out laterally to the side. If they hit the sled with the right shoulder, they should move out to the left and vice versa. The next unit repeats the offensive line drill as soon as the group in front of them has moved out of the way. Coaching Details - Be sure each unit has a chance to block with each shoulder. Be sure each lineman starts out of a good stance, then uses proper blocking technique. Offensive Line Drill #5 5-Man Reach Drill Objective - Improve proper reach block. Action - Start everything like Offensive Line Drill #4 except that now each blocker is lined up to the right or left of each sled pad, depending on the direction of the reach block you want to work on. On the coach's signal, all five players execute a reach block, drive the sled, then move out laterally on the next signal. The next unit moves in and repeats the offensive line drill. Coaching Details - Be sure each unit has a chance to reach block from both sides. Be sure each lineman starts out of a good stance, then uses proper blocking technique. Emphasize driving the sled in a straight line. Offensive Line Drill #6 5-Man Seat Roll Objective - Improve agility and explosion. Action - Align the lineman in a single file just to one side and parallel with the 5-man sled. The first player in line gets into a 3-point stance in front of the first pad. On the coach's signal, he fires out into the pad with the inside shoulder, then performs a seat roll and ends up in front of the next pad. The next player in line, meanwhile, gets into a 3-point stance in front of the first pad. On the coach's signal, these two players repeat the same drill as the next player in line gets into position in front of the first pad. Repeat this offensive line drill until the last blocker in line has reached the far end of the sled. Coaching Details - Emphasize the need to explode into the sled each time, then get a quick recovery in order to seat roll to the next pad. Run this drill from both sides. 27 Reach Block Purpose: To emphasize the fundamentals of the reach block Coaching Pointers: When the defender is shading in the direction of the play take a paralele step toward him, drive hard off the step, and execute a good base block. This is not a chip block, a seal block or a chop block. We want a solid base block When taking your jab step, make it parallel to the line, and watch the defender closely for any quick inside penetration. If he is coming hard make the block quicker Such a defensive move will make your easier. If he slants away from you just push him down the line of scrimmage or chip him and go to second level. Set-up and Instruction: Position all of the lineman in two parallel lines facing each other as illustrated. Instruct one line to be defenders; the other blockers. Alternate these assignments so that everyone gets atleast for or five repitions on offense. Tell the defenders to shade the blockers slightly, to line up on an inside or outside shoulder. Vary the cadence. On the snap count, have the blockers execute a reach block. Check for an appropriate first step, followed by good blocking fundamentals. Make a lot of corrections during this drill and have each lineman execute the block as deliberately as possible. Commit everything to muscle memory. 28 Seal Block Purpose: to emphasize the fundamentals of the seal block Coaching Pointers: This is not a devastating block! All we want to do is eliminate penetration or prevent pursuit. Most of the time, you’ll be blocking a defender who is head up on the blocker next to you. The blocker next to you may be pulling, so you’ll have to seal the man who is head up on him. Remember, eliminate his pursuit or penetration! The eastiest way to do it is to cut him, chop him, get your body into his legs and feet! On the snap, extend your head and arms into his feet and legs – and keep driving your legs! Drive right through him, if possible. If you can stay on all fours and crab him, that’s even better, just be sure to get into his legs! Set-up and Instruction: Position all the linemen in two parallel lines facing each other as illustrated. Instruct one line to be defenders and the other, blockers. Instruct the blockers to position themselves in the normal splits. Alternate the two lines so that everyone gets at least four or five reps on offense. Tell the defenders to line up one man to their left or right. Have all the lineman execute the seal block in both directions, be sure each gets at least three or four reps in each direction. Make corrections as needed. 29 Cross-Block Purpose: to emphasize the fundamentals of the cross block Coaching Pointers: This blocking scheme may be called in the huddle when expecting a certain defensive front. If you can call it on the line, call it when the player next to you may have trouble making his block because of the alignment or shading. Remember the player on the outside normally blocks first; the player on the inside normally blocks second The first player should slant down hard, putting his head in front of the defender to prevent penetration. The second player should jab step in the direction of his block, look at the defender, and drive hard off his teammate’s backside. Don’t hesitate. Wait just long enough for your teammate to clear in front of you. Set-up and Instruction: Align the guards and tackles in lines as illustrated. Position defenders in front of them, varying their alignment. Sometimes have the man on the guard’s head shade his inside shoulder. At other times, put a linebacker in his normal alignment, then move into the B gap to blitz. Explain ehy each situation requires a cross block, then have the linemen execute the blocks. Once a tandem completes their block have them swith to defense. Check for good lead steps in the direction of the blocks, quickness of execution, and blocking fundamentals, make lots of corrections. 30 Double Teaming Purpose: to emphasize the fundamentals of a double team block. Coaching Pointers: The blocker furthest from the defender executes a DRIVE block: the blocker closest to the defender executes a Post Block A DRIVE block is a good base block. Lower the boom on the inside man and drive him out of the hole. A POST block simply prevents penetration and sets up the defender to be driven out of the hole. When you POST block, don’t put your head to either side of the defender. Keep your head in front of him and prevent penetration. Try to hit the defender at the same time. That means the drive blocker is going to have to really move. Set-up and Instructions: Align all the offensive linemen in two lines, one player with a stand up dummy in front of the inside line as illustrated. Use the above coaching pointers and some of your own to explain the responsibilities of the blockers. Alternate the dummy holder with the blockers so that all lineman get for or five repetitions at each position. This is not a rapid fire drill. Be sure to take enough time to explain, teach, and make corrections. 31 Broom Stick Battle Purpose: To simulate hand fighting of lineman Coaching Points: Each pair of lineman will need a broom handle The offensive lineman will take an inside grip using both hands. The defensive player will grip the broom handle of the outside. Defensive player will try to push, pull, twist, and unbalance the offensive lineman. For the offensive lineman to control the broom stick they will have to be in a good position to control their balance. This will be the same position when they pass block Set-up and Instructions: Pair up the lineman, one will take the offensive role while the other will be the defensive player. Offensive lineman will place both hands on the inside of the handle, while the defensive player will grasp toward the outside of the handle. On the count of the coach the defensive player wil try to push, pull, twist, raise and lower the broom stick. The offensive lineman will resist the movements and will try to control the movement of the broom handle. 32 Grading Lineman WHY GRADE LINEMAN: Makes the lineman accountable, It gives the lineman something to take pride in. HOW: Each player has two areas that are graded. Technique and Execution. Technique is whether they are doing the fundamentals right (staying low, proper steps, head on the proper side, Etc.) Execution is whether they made the block or not. They will receive a (+) or a (-) for each one. Their grade is figured out by counting up all the pluses the lineman receive and dividing it by the total number of chances (total plays they were in times two.) For Example: if a lineman was in for 20 plays and received 24 pluses, their grade would be 24/40 = 60% WHAT IS A GOOD GRADE: A winning grade is 70% or better. If the linemen grade out as a team at 70% we have a good chance that we will control the line of scrimmage and the game. OTHER STATS: We also recors other stats for the lineman: knockdowns (K), Loafs (L), Missed assignments (MA), Sacks given up (S), and Penalties (P) POSTING THE GRADES: We put up the tally sheets every Monday after school. Game totals and season totals HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE: 2-21/2 hours to grade. I will watch every play 5 to 7 times. It takes about 15 minutes to type the ino into the computer.
